The ferries across the IJ in Amsterdam, right behind Central Station, link the city centre to Noord. Every day they carry tens of thousands of people across. After a short sprint to make the boat, passengers look for their spot. They stare ahead while the roar of the engine swells. Packed close together, they stand on deck. For the five minutes of the crossing, the city can be seen from a distance. Wind, lapping water and the view give a brief escape from the rush.
