Muurbloempjes

2017 – present

Something unexpected grows in the cracks, seams and joints of the city. Small flowers on fragile stems, clinging to stone, asphalt and concrete. Muurbloempjes (2017 to now) is a photographic study of how stubbornly living things hold on in the city.

The series began with a pink flower growing between two grey stones. As a young adult I recognised something in that small flower. It made me look for more plants forcing their way through walls, pavements and facades. Each one tells its own quiet story. They bend, reach, survive and flower against the odds, adapting to the built world around them.

In these images I look at the balance between what we build and what grows by itself, between control and chance. The city becomes an ecosystem in which human structures and nature are no longer opposites, but increasingly entangled. Who shapes whom, and what grows in between?
